Middle School
10 years ago, BHPS first opened the doors to its phenomenal Middle School. WIthout the past and continued support of all the parents who believed and believe in our mission, we owe an undying debt of graditude. With the addition of grades 5 through 8, we more than doubled our yearly attendance to greater than 200 students. We pushed an already-amazing theatre program to unheard-of levels of achievement (with productions of high-school quality music, dance, and acting), and we launched the Betton Hills Blue Jays soccer team that competes with other area private schools, including Holy Comforter and Trinity. Mostly, though, the addition of Middle School to BHPS gave us -- as educators -- the opportunity to raise our academic bar and give our returning students the ever-extending challenge to "stay ahead of the game." Yes, new students are also welcome, and they will often face some difficulty in adjusting to our demanding Core Knowledge® Curriculum; but this will more than pay off, as your child will doubtless be ready to perform at the top of his/her class in whatever high school they attend. (Indeed, on more than one occasion, a BHPS Middle School graduate has skipped a grade upon entry to high school!) Our academics are highly regarded by Tallahassee High Schools, and we are proud of our students' accomplishments. The mastery of note-taking, time-management, and general scholastic organization learned at BHPS makes all our graduates' transitions to the next level fun, relaxed, and preeminently confident.
In line with the rest of our schools, our Middle School is relatively small and consists of the four grades already mentioned. Our rooms are structured by subject in the four major areas: math, science, language arts, and social studies. The students move from class to class throughout the academic day, visiting their lockers as needed between classes. Each grade has its own homeroom and teacher, who takes the grades in a yearly rotation and is responsible for his/her students on a continual, four-year basis. This unique approach helps our students build an unrivaled trust and rapport with their "HR" teacher. Additionally, our students are involved in two mandatory "electives" daily. These include a rotation of Art, Music, Physical Education, Theatre, Spanish, Home Econmonics, and Woodwork, each held twice a week.
