Grading Scale
The Preschool curriculum is not centered around any traditional grading scale. Rather than "grading" these students, we evaluate them three times per year to gauge their academic, social, emotional, and physical advancement.
For Kindergarten and 1st Grade, the BHPS grading scale is similar to that of the Leon County public system, though we do assign plusses and minuses at the limits of each letter score.
Academic Scale:
- E = 91-100%
- Meets all criteria for excellent progress in all academic areas.
- Consistently demonstrates high level of understanding of concepts/skills/content taught and can apply to other situations.
- Completes tasks provided by the teacher(s) beyond regularly assigned activities.
- S+ = 81-90%
- Meets all criteria for satisfactory progress in all academic areas.
- Consistently demonstrates an understanding of concepts/skills/content taught.
- Completes all tasks provided by the teacher(s) within time period allotted.
- S = 66-80%
- Participates in all activities encouraged by the teacher(s).
- Often demonstrates understanding of concepts/skills/content taught.
- Frequently needs guidence to complete assignments.
- N = 61-65%
- Inconsistent in participating in class activities.
- Inconsistent in demonstrating understanding of concepts/skills/content taught.
- Even with encouragement, inconsistent with completing assigned tasks.
- U = 0-60%
- Participation in class activites is unsatisfactory.
- Shows minimal understanding of concepts/skills/content taught.
- Failing to meet acceptable standards in daily work.
Conduct is scored separately from academic achievement, and is broken down into two groups: Work/Study Habits and Citizenship.
Work/Study Habits include the student's ability to listen attentively, follow directions, complete work on time, take pride in his/her work, work neatly and independently, make good use of time, and carry out assigned responsibilities.
Citizenship is graded on the student's exhibition of self-control and self-discipline, courtesy, good manners, ability to get along well with others, and respect for those in authority, for school property, and the property of others.
Conduct Scale:
- E = Excellent
- Very consistent in demonstrating all characteristics listed under citizenship and work/study habits.
- S = Satisfactory
- Usually demonstrates all characteristics listed under citizenship and work/study habits.
- N = Needs Improvement
- Often fails to demonstrate one or more of the characteristics listed under citizenship and work/study habits
- U = Unsatisfactory
- Consistently fails to demonstrate one or more of the characteristics listed under citizenship and work/study habits.
Please be sure to ask your child's teacher about specific citizenship policies, as these play a role in determining each child's grade at every grade level.
