Core Knowledge®

Core Knowledge® is an educationally-advanced curriculum set forth in 1986 by founder E.D. Hirsch, Jr., professor emeritus at the University of Virginia. In essence, members of the Core Knowledge Foundation® are schools -- like BHPS -- that have taken on the challenge of challenging your children to a higher level of competence across all subjects in the classroom.

As an idea, Core Knowledge® maintains that "for the sake of academic excellence, greater fairness, and higher literacy," all schools need a "solid, specific, shared core curriculum in order to help children establish strong foundations of knowledge, grade by grade." This knowledge, too, must be sequenced, as knowledge invariably begets knowledge. With specificity and focus at the earliest sructured levels, students are guaranteed to continue learning at the next levels, unencumbered by and readily advancing beyond the grade-to-grade "re-learning" that often takes place in higher educational systems.

Core Knowledge® is many things, and it continues to evolve with the times' technological and social progression. Each school involved in the program plays a part in adding to it, and BHPS is proud to help lead this revolution in learning!
