Arts

BHPS subscribes to the Core Knowledge® Curriculum, which allows all subjects to work alongside one another. Specifically, the visual arts address various cultures and the arts, along with subject matter, architectural differences, specific animals, landscapes, and so on.

Students also spend time learning about art history, including various art periods, artists, specific works, materials, and their cultural significance to the art world (and world in general). As an example, for world history (specifically Japan), students learn about and create the style of dress with Kimono dolls, the landscape and architectural style called Triarama, bamboo painting, Japanese fans, cherry blossom trees, and Japanese lettering. Another example, dealing with science, specifically oceans: Students create paintings of marine life, papier-mache fish, ships, and boats, and they learn about artists who use the ocean as subject matter, along with Impressionism vs. Romantic vs. Conceptional art periods.

We use various materials to allow the students to explore two-dimensional and 3D art. Materials include clay, papier-mache, sculpture, recycled textiles, paint (watercolor, acrylic, tempera), oil and chalk pastels, charcoal, and pencil.

At the close of the school year, we host a showcase exhibiting all students' artwork. Please visit our Art page to view the some of our students' creations and information about our art shows.
